The advertising is designed for 25-to 54-year-old newcomers. Based upon extensive research of the spiritual concerns and needs of newcomers, the advertising messages address them in language that places us on common ground. Many in this audience are unfamiliar with the language of faith and others have had negative experiences with religious organizations and the use of some traditional religious language with them can block communication. Igniting Ministry attempts to discover and address their deeper needs and to offer The United Methodist Church as a community in which they can experience nurture and connection in the body of Christ.

Each piece of communication seeks to extend an invitation to enter into a relationship within a loving, nurturing community to grow in God’s love as revealed in Jesus Christ – all set in the language of the seeker. The advertising extends the invitation; yet spiritual growth occurs within the community of the local church.

The Igniting Ministry ‘Welcoming and Media Planner’ (aka Handbook) has been updated and is now in PDF form and available free [PDF, click here]. This handbook is 153 pages of training, help, and ideas, and a great reference guide to keep handy throughout the year.

There are seven “expressions” (groups of similarly themed adverting) that convey the different aspects of The United Methodist Church.
