The “Finding Yourself” message may evoke a variety of responses, perhaps offering more questions than answers: “Just what IS the message here, anyway? What’s with all these people? What do the screens represent? Who is holding that little girl’s hand?”
Designed to be visually and mentally challenging, this message pushes the storytelling of The United Methodist Church’s “Open hearts” television ads in an edgy, new direction. As a modern-day parable, it asks us to bring our own experiences to bear as we interpret what we see. For some, the message may feel confusing, fast-paced, disjointed, unfinished. For others, particularly spiritual seekers for whom life is all those things, the message may hit exactly the right spot and touch a heart-felt yearning for connection to God and others.
The underlying theme of the spot: We find ourselves through a process, as we show others who we really are, listen for the Holy Spirit’s promptings, and explore our life’s meaning and purpose within a loving community.
“For those who want to save their
life will lose it,
and those who lose their life for my sake will find it.” – Matthew 16:25 (NRSV)
